There are a couple key points to keep in mind. Prevent your opponent from being able to rotate effectively altering your balance and your ability to escape, transition your grip and use physics to execute this move.

You rely on Jiu Jitsu doctrine instilled in your partner to the extent that when in side control, he will likely attempt to bring in a knee and turn into you. This establishes the foundation for the heel hook as you transition from side control into the heel hook.

Here is another BJJ Video in which I make a return to the big screen… well… the screen. The sweep is a foundational move taught at the white belt level and as you progress as a BJJ player it is important to learn how to anticipate and prevent potential defensive moves against your sweep.

Watch how to use your knees in terms of timing and anticipating the defense to this move. If in the event your opponent does manage to get an arm through, you can move to the stiletto sweep as outlined here.

Remember… Jiu Jitsu is full of variables, Combat is Fluid and the Battle Space is 360 degrees.

This is a special weekend because it is BJJ Black Belt Piet Wilhelms birthday. Classy Grappler is demonstrating a move which he calls the Gut Toe Hold Lock in this Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Video.

When your opponents foot finds its way up to your hip, there is a powerful move you can use. Watch how Classy creates some space to slip his arm under the ankle. From here the move is similar to a rear naked choke in terms of arm position and it is finished by using your gut to apply pressure and pushing with your hips.

Ricky is the youngest American to earn a BJJ Black Belt (under Pedro Sauer). He has worked with UFC/WEC fighters across North America including champions such as Sean Sherk, Frank Mir, Miguel Torres, and Forrest Griffin. Lundell wrestled and lettered at Iowa State University without any prior wrestling experience, shocking the grappling and wrestling world.

A two-time National Grappling Champion (2007-08) and two-time World Team Trials Champion, Lundell went on to be the two-time back-to-back FILA World Champion (2007, 2008).
